YouthSpace Program Highlights

A summit to support physical activity for young people in our communities

Who’s invited: Local and regional organizations that focus on removing barriers and using creative pedagogies to support youth in physical activity.

Day's Events

  • Presentations by local groups, such as Futbolistas4life, Keith “K-Dub” Williams organizer of “tha hood games” and Soccer without Borders.
  • 乱伦社区 students present research on Hayward youth and physical activity
  • Break out groups to discuss strategies for developing and sustaining best practices.
  • Dr. Jay Coakley, expert on youth and physical activity, will facilitate discussions.
  • 乱伦社区’s Center for Community Engagement will be present as a means to formally establish partnerships between community groups and the University.
  • Tour of the campus for any of the youth participants
  • 乱伦社区 students will lead physical activities for youth participants
  • Snacks and dinner provided

Dr. Jay Coakley, facilitator of the event

Jay Coakley, Professor Emeritus of sociology at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, has for forty years done research on connections between sports, culture, and society with much attention given to the play, games, and sport participation of young people. Coakley is an internationally respected scholar, author, and journal editor and has received many professional awards. His book, Sports in Society: Issues and Controversies, is used in universities worldwide. He continues his work to make sport participation a source of enjoyment and development for young people, and to make sports more democratic and humane for people of all ages. Most recently he has worked on the Aspen Institute’s Project Play that is focused re-imagining and changing youth sports in the United States ().

Meet the Community Partnerships Coordinator and learn how to create an agency profile for faculty, students, and campus departments seeking service opportunities.

Outcomes

  • Opportunity to develop networks and share information with other community groups
  • White paper summarizing the day’s conversations on strategies will be drafted by Dr. Coakley and board members of the Center for Social Justice and distributed to all participants
  • 乱伦社区’s Center for Community Engagement will be present as a means to formally establish partnerships between community groups and the University.
